Vanessa Wiliams: ABC Wanted To Stop Production At Episode 16

Whilst some, or be it most fans, are still mourning the loss of Ugly Betty, 3 months on since the airing of the final episode, word is based on this interview with Vanessa Williams, ABC after reducing the season 4 order of eps down to 20 from 22, wanted to end the show on ep 16- 'All The World's A Stage'!

It must have been hard to learn that the show wasn't getting picked up.

Vanessa Williams: We were all kind of heartbroken. I would have loved to do another four years, but it wasn't in the cards. Wilhelmina has been a hard role to put away because I love her strength and, of course, loved every witty line the writers gave me. We were all surprised by the news. We were shooting on location in the East Village when our executive producer told us that the network canceled us. We were supposed to do 22 episodes. They wanted to stop at 16. We begged for a few more to be able to wrap up the show with dignity. We stopped at 20 episodes so we could have some closure.

How convenient of ABC- NOT!!! Just when we thought issues surrounding their treatment of the show haven't died down already, out comes this revelation by Vanessa. They were so stubborn and unwilling to budge that Vanessa, Michael, America and co had to 'force them' to change their minds and carry on until episode 20.

ABC will probably live to regret it as well. I just don't see any of their replacement shows for Betty doing as well as Ugly Betty this fall.

Here are the poll results for the question I posted way back a few months ago this year: In your opinion, who or what is responsible for the show being cancelled?

An overwhelming majority of you have pointed the finger at ABC for the show's demise, although Silvio and the writers were by no means innocent either, as their inconsistent levels of writing continued throughout seasons 2 and 3.  They got 15% of the vote.

Thanks for all  your votes!
