America Ferrera is happy with the way Ugly Betty ends because it doesn’t feel “inorganic”.
The actress plays hapless Betty Suarez in the US TV programme, a budding journalist who doesn’t quite fit in at fashionable Mode magazine where she works. Network ABC recently announced the current, fourth, season of the show would be the last, and America was keen for the ending to be a fitting tribute to her character.
She was worried scriptwriters might come up with something unbelievable, but is confident fans of the drama will be pleased.
“It’s hard, because now people know its ending I get approached by people all the time with their ideas of how it should end, which is great. I like that they have an opinion, but I think it will be hard to please everyone,” she explained. “I am happy. It’s harder in American television as you never know when the show is going to be done, so you don’t know if you are writing towards the end or for four more years. I am happy that we knew it was ending but we didn’t try to get somewhere that was inorganic to where we were going.”
America has enjoyed every moment of playing Betty, even though her alter-ego sports thick glasses, frizzy hair and braces. The actress enjoys getting lost in a character, and feels like Betty is a totally different person to her.
She is still amazed by how successful the show has been. She recently finished shooting the last ever episode in London, and was surprised by how well known she is in the country. “I just loved the character and really saw she was a character with a lot of space to grow, physically and emotionally. It’s been four years now playing this character, I’ve been so happy with the experience,” she told UK show GMTV. “It’s changed my life, being on a TV show that’s shown around the world. You couldn’t become recognisable to people in a faster way. That was shocking, travelling out of the US being in small little places around the world where people know you.”
