Thoughts on Episode 4.04- The Weiner, The Bun & The Boob

Well after 3 somewhat not- so- great episodes, this one was just fantastic :D-
Notice this episode was written by Brian Tanen

The first 15 mins were just great:

Marc and Amanda are back to their ways by insulting Betty

Lexie was a bit of a, ahem, b*tch- I agree with Betty, Daniel should've went for Gavin

God, I loved Vanessa in this one- as Wilhelmina, she rocked! The rivalry between Willie and Claire is just great to watch.

'Community of the phoenix...' with a name like that, it sounds more like a cult, as opposed to a self-help group

I am just loving Hilda this season so far- she is just so sassy and humourous

Wow, Matt was just so... nice in this one

Oh and Amanda and Matt.... not looking forward to this unlikely (romantic) pairing and possible love triangle involving those two and another main character from the show

Love the Marc and Betty scenes- oh and the outfits were LOL!! Just hysterical! I felt for Marc but I also agreed with Betty too- whenever there is a glimmer of hope with him, for some reason Marc regresses as a person as opposed to moving forwards. I enjoyed it when they teamed up together. Even when they were fighting, arguing with each other, both America Ferrera and Michael Urie were on top form here as their respective characters.

Amanda screaming at Betty and Matt after her dream snog/kiss sequence and seeing Betty in her hotdog outfit- hahaha!!

Hilda and Archie scenes were great too-  this is the first real sign that their relationship is going to have a few bumps along the way.

Oh and the ending with Marc and Betty, was just so adorable- I loved it!! It made me squee with joy :D!

*Overall:

This has to be one of my favourite season 4 episodes- much BETTER than the last ones. Finally, an Ugly Betty episode that I have loved throughout- after a poor start to this season. Hurrah, it's back to its best! I just hope it gets better and better as the only way is up.

America Ferrera Filming On Set

Here are some photos of America as Betty on set of Ugly Betty: I think she looks great with that hat and Pink coat. Plus, the bag is a nice touch too. It is much better than that hideous cat purse she had last season, wouldn't you agree?

Tom From Ugly Betty News: Amanda To Become A Designer At Mode (?)

TimesTalks: An Evening With Ugly Betty

Mode After Hours: Stress-Orcism

October 26, 2009 by Tom

'This webisode gave me one of those “duh!” moments, and gave me a pretty good idea of where Amanda’s storyline is going. I think she is going to get close to Matt, not to become his lover, but to get him to give her Christina’s job. I mean, she would most prefer to marry a billionaire, or start out as a designer, but that’s not going to happen. BUT, working in the closet can lead to a career as a designer, as Christina showed.

I assumed at the end of last season that Amanda would finally try to weasel her way into being Daniel’s assistant (she always wanted the job). It never occurred to me that she might want Christina’s job, but she’s always in the closet anyway, knows her way around the sex room, and knows a thing or two about design.
When you look at it that way, it does seem like a perfect fit (Amanda will have to develop a work ethic, though).'

http://www.uglybettynews.com/2009/10/26/mode-after-hours-stress-orcism/

Notice that Tom mentioned that *Amanda will get close to Matt* but not in terms of becoming his girlfriend- rather that both he and Marc see the potential in her from a work point-of-view, so that Matt can promote her as Mode's new seamstress/designer.

I think Tom might be onto something here. I hope he is right on this: I do hope though that she doesn't fall for Matt in the end, or that if the worst does happen, that the relationship is short-lived. I see those two having very little in common with each other and I just cannot see those two as a couple, anyway.

Silvio Horta did mention that at some point during Season 4 we will see Amanda's, as well as Marc's love lives but also, Amanda is going to get the promotion she deserves, after losing out to Betty as Daniel's assistant. The Amanda Tanen of season 1 would've been happy doing the paperwork, making contacts- stuff that Betty was and is still doing for that matter, even though she is now an editor. If Amanda had been Daniel's assistant that is. But 3, 4 years has since passed,- and I think that as the show moves onto another level, we'll see that Amanda's career aspirations and ambitions have almost completely changed.

Now, instead, she wants to fill Christina's void, or be it shoes- she realises she has a purpose at Mode- other than sitting at her desk, answering the phones and thus, probably knows what she is capable of doing; work-wise. Amanda notices she has a creative flair and though she spends a lot of time in the love dungeon/secret sex room, this is where we will see her ideas for fashion really come into play and for her to utilise those ideas. As proven in the last episode and back in season 3, Amanda has shown she is not as dumb as people make her out to be.

A lot of fans expect Amanda to climb further up the career ladder, which is important for her because she has been an assistant for far too long- I'd still love for her to find love, yet frankly, I don't see it happen with Matt.
The writers have to grasp Becki Newton's character this season, even though Season 3 Amanda was fab; the so-called love triangle she is 'apparently' involved in is something I am not particularly looking forward to- although I am hoping Amanda doesn't revert back to the Mandy of early Season 1.

As far as I see it, I think it is time we saw Amanda's worth and potential as a possible designer- writers, take hint of this please.

Spoiler TV Cancellation Table

Now this table shouldn't be taken for granted but here it is for last Friday night's schedule in full. Each show is allocated a colour, according to the figures - if it is green/turquoise, then it means the show is doing well and is safe from being cancelled. If it is pink, then that is a worrying sign and it is therefore 'Likely to be cancelled' .  If however it is yellow, then the show is in major trouble and indicates it is struggling really badly. As you can tell, Ugly Betty is currently languishing in the yellow zone or otherwise known as 'in danger' and almost hovering the dreaded 'Likely to be cancelled' zone.

According to Spoiler TV who compiled these ratings, this is all supposed to be a bit of fun and not really serious. But currently, the truth is Ugly Betty is not doing very well: it is struggling for ratings and figures right now-, and what is even worse is the second episode performed worse for figures compared to the season 4 opener. Despite being a good episode, all-round. (Fingers crossed) things should turn around soon but with less people and fans tuning in on the increase, it is not looking good at all.

Horta Interview: Less 'Ugly' Betty

Silvio Horta: 'Ugly Betty' A Lot Less Ugly

Monday, October 26, 2009

With change comes even more change, and Ugly Betty is starting to prove how much it's gone through for this season. Even though there's a significant drop in ratings for the show, there's still some fight left in it to survive the move to Friday nights. It's probably because of series creator Silvio Horta and his ideas for the show's growth.

Horta explained to TV Guide how Betty's character has been changing over the seasons. This time, it was a big decision to take up her physical appearance at last. However, it doesn't seem like it's going to end there if the show is indeed given more time.

"I think it's gradual; I don't think you see a huge transformation; it's a step," Horta said. "During the first two seasons, she was Homely Betty. Season 3 she was working at a fashion magazine, so she was inheriting some nice clothes, but she just doesn't know how to put it together."
The Ugly Betty creator had to work things out with the show's star, America Ferrera, and both agreed that it would be best for their TV heroine to transform on her own. "It was important to me and America that the change not come because someone says, "You need to change." I think the look is still her."

There's always been change on Ugly Betty, and part of the character's life is how she deals with situations surrounding her. A huge bit of the storyline is, of course, Betty's romantic life. Unfortunately, Silvio Horta is zipping his lips tight on that subject. Well, not quite.

"Matt's not going away. He took the job at Mode because of her. When people are happy together, it's hard," the creator explained. "Conflict makes for better writing and better TV. Nobody wants to see people hanging out being happy."
Another bit of conflict for Betty might come in the form of Daniel (Eric Mabius). Horta has declared in the past that the two will not end up together, but this time he isn't even sure yet. Apparently, even the creator has undergone a huge wave of change.
"At this point, I actually know what's going to happen. I thought I knew when I made that quote, but you re-evaluate and reassess. What I said before may or may not still be true."

Ugly Betty Cameo Wishlist- Part 3

Genesis Awards 2009

Name: Wendie Malick
Date of Birth: 13 December, 1950
Place of Birth: Buffalo, New York
Most Known to everyone as: Nina Van Horn from the 90s sitcom, 'Just Shoot Me'; also appeared in the last season of Frasier
*Well known fact: She auditioned for the role of Diane in 'Cheers', which eventually went to Shelley Long

Fans of the short-lived sitcom, 'Just Shoot Me' will easily recognise Wendie Malick, who played ex-model- turned- writer Nina Van Horn of fashion magazine, 'Blush', for 7 seasons. 'Blush' was Just Shoot Me's very own Mode- only without the bitchy gay assistant. Suffice to say, she was just hilarious on Just Shoot Me- her comic timing and sheer delivery of her lines made her one of the star attractions of the show.

Interestingly, Wendie's career first kicked off when she became a model for the aptly named, 'Wilhelmina Modelling Agency'- no relation to Vanessa Williams's Wilhelmina character that is!

Though she has appeared on numerous TV shows, such as Baywatch, her first actual acting role was on the sitcom, 'Dream On'- the show lasted for 6 years in total.

As mentioned she played Martin Crane's girlfriend, Ronee in the NBC sitcom, 'Frasier' for 10 episodes in season 11. With a career spanning over 30 years, Wendie has an abundance of experience under her belt as a performer: both on- stage and screen.

Wendie is well known these days for her voice-over work on animated shows and cartoons such as Nickelodeon's 'Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius'.

Wendie Malick would make a great guest star on Ugly Betty - she has proven in the past that she is the type of actress/ performer who can play a wide variety of roles. Her theatre credentials speak from themselves- she was in Lou Diamond Phillips' play 'Burning Desire' in 2007 alongside Michael Urie.

On Ugly Betty, I think the ideal role would be as either a correspondent on Fashion TV alongside Alec Mapa's, Suzuki ST Pierre- because for me, she has that newscaster-type voice and a personality to go with i and of which Wendie can carry off, or as a hard-nosed worker/representative of Meade Publications.

I could see Wendie at Mode alongside Betty, Marc, Amanda, Daniel, Claire, Willie; the problem is in what role or capacity would she occupy? Probably not as the owner of Meade, as it's Claire's anyway. I wouldn't mind her playing a catty Nina Van Horn again but with a different character name. Would it irate ex- 'Just Shoot Me' fans? Possibly so and probably not.

Wendie is an exceptional talent and a brilliant character actress, whose talents demonstrates her flexibility and range by playing a diverse set of characters. To have her on a show like Ugly Betty, would be great- she'd be a hoot!

Here she is as Nina from Just Shoot Me:

New Mode After Hours Webisode- 3.06 'Stress-Orcism'

U.S.- Ugly Betty Still Not Doing Well On Friday Nights So Far

This is for Friday night's episode 'Blue and Blue':

ABC's "Ugly Betty" was third with a 3.1/5 million, dropping more than half-a-million viewers from its premiere last week and dipping to a 1.2 demo.

http://www.hitfix.com/articles/2009-10-24-tv-ratings-cbs-dominates-dollhouse-ugly-betty-drop

This is not looking good so far for the show- I have a feeling that the longer this slump continues, the sooner this show is going to get cancelled :(.  A shame really because this episode was excellent and a vast improvement to last week's Season 4 debut.

The ratings were complied by Nielson.

TV Guide InFANity Special

I was searching for Ugly Betty videos on You Tube and I came across this:

This special feature on Ugly Betty is in four parts: the first part discusses the U.S. incarnation and how the idea for an American version was going to be put together with the help of Selma Hayek- the so-called 'brains' and Executive Producer behind the move into making a 'western' Ugly Betty a reality . It includes excerpts and interviews with the other cast members. The presenter also discusses the main plot of the show. In the second part, we take a retrospective look at the characters from Mode Magazine and Betty's family; the third part has Michael Urie showing us a grand tour of Mode's offices and the fashion styles which define the individuality of each character, whilst the fourth part concludes with Ugly Betty's cast members fashion 'dos and dont's' tips, as well as recalling their previous work experiences that they undertook before they became famous. This documentry was released during the 2007-08 period of Season 2.

Though this is based on Season 2, one can watch this and still make comparisons with Season 4, which kicked off last week in America.

It is kind of interesting to see how different things fared on the show back then, and then comparing say, the first season to the current fourth season. Because the show has in many ways evolved and changed especially with regards to the characters; mostly for the better. The different storylines that take place within Ugly Betty take the audience or be it fans to different places and often they challenge people's social, cultural attitudes, ideas and experiences, in relation to the show's themes and storylines.

Another thing that striked me is that during the first season, Betty was first hired as Daniel's assistant- a role of which Amanda (played by Becki Newton) desperately wanted for herself.... and now as Betty is an editor in series 4- a position that Marc wanted so badly for himself-, she finds herself back to being loathed, abused and hated by Marc, Amanda, Wilhelmina yet again- though in this instance by Marc. Just like what happened during the first season when Betty first arrived at Mode.

This is certainly great viewing and a really fascinating insight into the show and the cast members as they talk about Ugly Betty and its postive impact on fans like us, around the globe :).

Ugly Betty Podcast for October 22, 2009

Listen to this week's Ugly Betty Podcast hosted by yours truly, Becki Newton and Michael Urie by clicking on the Green highlighted and italicised link.

This week's special guest is Daniel Eric Gold, who plays Matt Hartley. Becki and Michael both refer to Daniel as 'Goldie'.

Very cool but interesting fact: Hamish who plays the designer in this episode, 'Blue On Blue' previously performed in the Shakesperean play, Hamlet with Michael during his Julliard days. Here is a pic that proves this:

So cool! Oh and the prank calls made by Becki and Michael were just hilarious! : D

My Thoughts on 4.03 'Blue On Blue'

  • I thought this episode was a bigger improvement over last week's double opener- well, the first part of 'The Butterfly Effect' that is.
  • The first 20 mins was really interesting- Marc and Amanda watching Betty as she talked to Matt; Betty and Hilda discussing about Matt and Hilda sticking up for her sister- right now- and that Matt is being a jerk.
  • Betty showing up with a birthday cake for Marc- that was kind of sweet on her behalf.
  • Jaime Lynn Sigler's character, Natalie is up to something- she has a secret which pits her against Betty, right? Whatever it is, it involves Daniel, and it is going to be up to her to rescue him from it.
  • Sammy seems a nice guy- Adam Ferrara's performance was really good.
  • Thought the designer guy, Evan was a bit of a pompous tw*t at first, but he became likable as the episode went on
  • The whole Matt/Amanda & Betty/Evan situation in the restaurant was really interesting to watch and to see it unfold the way it did. I was a bit worried that she would take a liking for Matt here.Oh and did I mention Hilda was an absolute riot in this one- YAY! The Hilda I love is back! :D
  • Connor's return- wow, now I didn't see that one coming! I knew he'd return at some point later on this season but I didn't expect it to happen so early on.
  • I was also happy that Matt finally admitted that he was being a jackass to Betty and Betty accepted it. What is going to happen with them from now onwards? We shall watch and see with interest.
  • The scene with Matt and Amanda was interesting  towards the end, although I felt uncomfortable with the idea that they might be romantically involved, as implied by those last few moments.
  • Also, Amanda told Betty to move on from Matt- but I just wonder did she just say this, so she- as in Amanda- can make her move on him? I surely hope not. If it turns out to be true, then I'd be appalled.
*Overall: 'Blue On Blue' was a very good episode- much BETTER than 'The Butterfly Effect' and whilst it wasn't extremely funny, the way it unfolded as it continued kept me glued to this one throughout. I was a little bit pessemistic and doubtful when I saw the initial previews beforehand, but thankfully, the episode was realy interesting. Definitely worth watching again.

Promo For Episode 4.04- 'The Weiner, The Bun And The Boob'

Official ABC Promotional Poster For Season 4

Take a look at this- it's the official promotional poster by ABC used to promote season 4 of Ugly Betty.
I just saw it on a website and thought it is really interesting. It shows a split screen of Betty back in Season 1 when she first arrived at Mode wearing the Red poncho and of the other newer and improved Betty without the massive bangs, bushy eyebrows. Plus, her hair is more refined than what it was before.

I think it is really good- the concept they used is simple but effective. What do you all make of it?

TV Guide Interview With Michael Urie

Tuesday, October 20, 2009
Last updated 1:45 p.m. PT

Michael Urie: Every Day on Ugly Betty Is Like Halloween

By MICKEY O'CONNOR
TV GUIDE

Michael Urie loves Marc St. James, the dressed-to-kill mean guy he plays on Ugly Betty. This season, though, Urie says that Marc's evil ways are somewhat justified. In the Season 3 finale, Marc lost a coveted editor's position to Betty, and while he still worships Wilhelmina, he's no longer enthralled with being her assistant. TVGuide.com spoke with Urie about how Marc copes with his disappointments, when he'll figure out Willy's dark secret and who plays his hookup in the Bahamas episode. (Hint: It's not Shakira.)

TVGuide.com: Marc was in a pretty bad place at the end of the season.

Michael Urie:
Yeah, he's back behind Wilhelmina's desk again, so he's conflicted and angry. And he's definitely got a beef with Betty. He didn't realize how prepared he was to be an editor, and now that he's back as an assistant, it's not what he wants — which is weird because he's [done it] for five years, and he has loved it. But once you sit in first class, it's hard to go back to coach.

TVGuide.com: Is he going to hold it against Willy? I mean, she kind of got him into this mess.

Urie: He doesn't know that he lost the job in a coin toss, so he doesn't blame Willy; he blames Betty entirely. Marc thinks that Daniel's vote trumped Wilhelmina's vote because he's a Meade and it's Meade Publications. As far as he knows, Willy gave him the job and then Daniel came along and gave it to Betty. [Marc thinks] he lost it out of favoritism, which infuriates him, and Betty thinks she got it because she's the best person for the job. They're both wrong.

TVGuide.com: So will he try to fix things?

Urie: He's trying, little by little, to bring down Betty. Marc is hoping that she fails. He's sort of trying to make it happen so he'll be in line for her job. It's fun. We've gone back and forth with Betty and Marc's relationship: They've been good with each other; they've been bad with each other; they've hated each other; they've begrudgingly loved each other. And now she really is standing in his way. As we've seen over the course of the entire series, in Marc's eyes she is not qualified to be an editor at a fashion magazine.

TVGuide.com: What else will Marc be up to this season?

Urie: Well, Willy is back to her old schemes, but she's also got a major secret. Marc finds out a little bit, but he's basically in the dark. But then he finds out more. This is Marc's inner conflict. Where he would normally break any rule and sniff any trash looking for dirt for Wilhelmina, now that's harder for him to do. He doesn't want to scheme and break the law anymore; he wants to work on fashion, so where now Willy has major legal problems, Marc is hesitant to help.

TVGuide.com: What do you think of the clothes you wear on the show?

Urie: I think they're hilarious. It's such a boon to an actor to get a laugh before you say anything. So often I just appear and it's funny because of what I'm wearing. There's a story about a theater actor who, every time he would make an entrance, he would bang on the wall backstage so the audience would be looking [at him] when he entered. I kind of feel like that's what Marc's wardrobe is.

TVGuide.com: I've heard you say that the clothes on the show aren't really your style.

Urie: Yeah, I mean, right now I'm wearing Uggs, dirty jeans and a coat that I bought at JCPenney. It's funny: Everyone gets so excited about Halloween, but it's pretty boring for me because every day [on Ugly Betty] is like Halloween — without the candy.

TVGuide.com: What does Marc think of Amanda's newfound ambition?

Urie: I think he's really surprised and impressed by it. He's going to be a great catalyst in helping her to find her full potential. I hope we continue to explore that, because they can definitely help each other to grow and build and not just be an assistant and a receptionist forever.

TVGuide.com: So he's not competitive or jealous?

Urie: Not with her, no. It's all about Betty — she's the one who showed up later and rose faster, and Amanda is in a different league. They're best friends; he supports her.

TVGuide.com: The fans really liked Marc with Cliff. Any chance you'll get David Blue [who left to join the cast of Syfy's Stargate Universe] back on the show?

Urie: He would have to jump through his stargate and come back to the world of Ugly Betty. There was talk of him showing up this season, but I think he couldn't come because he was busy with his new series. I get that too on Twitter; they just love Marc and Cliff together. I think it was a really sweet story line. David's a great actor and a great guy, and it would be fun to have him around again because Cliff throws Marc for a loop, takes him out of his comfort zone, which is such a great, interesting side [of the character].

TVGuide.com: So I hear Marc has both a romance and a bromance in the Bahamas episode.

Urie: Yes, for the first time ever, Marc and Daniel have a bit of a bonding experience. I've always thought this show has been good at pairing up odd couples, and they've never put Marc and Daniel together, so it's very fun, and hilarity, indeed, ensues. We're looking for meaningless Bahama hookups. I help him find one, and he helps me find one.

TVGuide.com: And your hookup is played by Becki Newton's brother, Matt Newton, right?

Urie: Yes. [He doesn't play] Amanda's brother, but I think that it's funny, in the world of Ugly Betty, that the man that Marc ends up with is the male version of Amanda. Matt and Becki resemble each other, and they're both the same size, attractive, adorable and funny.

TVGuide.com: Marc isn't part of the love triangle that we keep hearing about, is he?

Urie: No. Though he is involved, he's not one of the three. He's a pot-stirrer, so he helps to facilitate and encourage certain things.

TVGuide.com: What does Marc really think of Betty?

Urie: I think he respects her. He might not show it. But Betty makes him a better employee, and he makes her a better employee too. She keeps him on his toes. He has to work hard because she'll make him look bad if he doesn't. In a lot of ways, Betty and Marc are like Daniel and Wilhelmina. They can do a good job, but they have completely different methods.

TVGuide.com: So is Marc more like Wilhelmina than Daniel?

Urie: Yeah, probably, but that's just because of how he learned. I think Marc is less devious than Wilhelmina, but he will go the route of cruelty and cattiness. Neither Daniel nor Betty comes from the world of fashion; they just ended up there. And both Marc and Wilhelmina are from that superficial world.

TVGuide.com: What will Marc make of Betty's new look?

Urie: They've cleverly made this new look be just enough for Betty to have grown up a little bit, but she's still Betty. There are still going to be things to make fun of. And regardless of what she's wearing, Marc will always make fun of her weight and her ethnicity. She could wear Chanel every day and he'd still make fun of her.

TVGuide.com: Where would you like to see Marc end up at the end of the series?

Urie: With a spin-off. [Laughs] I think Marc will have a really nice position at Mode and he'll be really happy there. And he'll probably share an office with Amanda somehow and they'll have their wonderful, catty ways. Because I see Betty eventually being the editor of The New Yorker or something like that, but I could easily see Marc with a cush job at Mode.

Ugly Betty Cast's Big Night Out

I should've posted this last week, but hey, it's better late than never.

TV Guide Interview With Tony Plana

Ugly Betty's Tony Plana: Ignacio's "Horizons Have Expanded"
Oct 19, 2009, 02:29 PM ET
by Gina DiNunno

Betty's father, Ignacio, had a turbulent third season on Ugly Betty. He spent most of it recovering from a heart attack, and his girlfriend, Elena, left town for a nursing job. Nevertheless, Tony Plana, who plays the Suarez patriarch, says Ignacio remains optimistic and is ready for whatever comes his way. Plana tells TVGuide.com how Ignacio's personal life has changed, where he'll be working this season and how his family is evolving before his very eyes.

TVGuide.com: How are things going for Ignacio now that he's a citizen and has a new lease on life?

Tony Plana: He's got quite a crazy family still, but also his horizons have expanded in terms of his personal life — especially after his heart attack. I think he took a look at his life and said, "I'm always there for everyone else, but I got to take a look at myself and see what I want to do in this last stage of my life." He pursues the career he left in Mexico and takes on a new job as an assistant chef in the city. It challenges him, but he's enthusiastic about it.

TVGuide.com: What's the situation with Elena now that she's moved to California?

Plana: Ignacio has a long-distance relationship with Elena, which comes into play this season. They try to see each other periodically, but it's mostly him going out there because her schedule is less flexible. It's challenging, but there's constant communication. There's nothing like love to motivate learning when you want to communicate, so Ignacio learns how to email and becomes more computer-savvy. I think their relationship is going to be explored more in the second half of the season.

TVGuide.com: What does Ignacio think about all of Betty's changes?

Plana: He sees that she's evolving, advancing in her career and taking on new challenges. She's a new editor, changing her look and [getting] involved in a controversial relationship with a guy who's now her boss. It seems like she's taking on more mature relationships — or at least not getting into relationships with someone who has a girlfriend who's pregnant! Of course he worries he's losing his little girl, and if she's changing her values, and all that stuff parents worry about.

TVGuide.com: Is he still obsessed with Hilda's new boyfriend, Archie?

Plana: He's thrilled that she's dating the councilman and thinks this guy is a godsend, considering he has a job and no criminal record! I think Ignacio hopes Archie can elevate his daughter to the next level, but there are some complications coming up there. Even still, I think Ignacio says his prayers every night that they'll get married and Justin will have a stepfather he can look up to and emulate.

TVGuide.com: How will Ignacio help Justin adjust to high school?

Plana: Justin's not your typical high school kid. He's artistic, sensitive and in some ways eccentric, so he gets a lot of push-back at school. Ignacio has to support him through this. He actually becomes more compatible with his grandson by embracing his interests and starting to learn about fashion. We have a little contest in one of the episodes where Ignacio is identifying designers while Justin quizzes him on them. It's very funny and sweet.

Episode Promo for 4.03- 'Blue On Blue'

Episodes 4.01& 4.02-The Butterfly Effect (My Thoughts)

I finally managed to watch this episode, at long last today, and I have to say it was okay . I disagreed with what Tom from Ugly Betty News said when he mentioned on his site that comparing it to season 1 is an insult to season 1. It's too early at this point to fully compare this to Season 1, although  this episode was very much reminiscent of the first series. Season 1 was amazing in many respects and frankly, it will (probably) never be topped, ever. As for season 4, we'll see how this series goes. Here are a few pointers from this episode that I have made whilst watching this episode:

The Butterfly Effect- Part 1

- The removal of the braces- I liked how this idea was conveyed visually on screen

- I liked the mention of Christina earlier on in the episode- glad that the writers haven't forgotten how much we still miss her on Ugly Betty.

- I think that there is something fishy going on with Cal Hartley- I think he is using Claire for his own amibitions and plans. My prediction: he is two-timing Claire.

- What's with the British national anthem playing in the background at 05.23?

- The Willie and Betty scene was interesting- is Betty really going to turn into a version of Wilhelmina later on?

- Smith Cho's character, Megan reminds me somewhat of Amanda in season 1, only a tad smarter and more dislikable. She was a bit of a b*tch in this one.

-Marc in this episode was still pissed off about losing out to Betty for the editor's job and yet he was being nice and friendly with Justin. Michael Urie as Marc, was okay.

- Great to see Claire with Betty- aka Judith Meade- she has become one of my favourite characters on the show, as the series progressed, thanks in large to Judith's casting and performances.

- Still don't understand the logic behind the casting crew's decision to hire a different actress, Yaya Costa to play Nico. What is wrong in getting the original actress back?

Part 2

- The Lion King -type scene at the beginning was great.

- The new temp Helen, played by Kristen Johnston was a riot. I loved her. She really needs to become a regular character on the show and that Kristen is promoted to full-time status later on. Helen HAS to stay.

- It was good to see the Betty of Season 1 here in Season 4, as opposed to the Betty of Season 3; as much as I have enjoyed the last series a lot. At the moment, she finds herself in exactly the same position as she was 4 years ago, in terms of that she feels like an outsider at Mode. Marc, Megan, Matt have it in for Betty.

- Justin has changed a lot- he's not the same kid as he was. He has grown up a lot and I predict that this could be the season where we might see him in an 'relationship' and where issues with his sexuality might become more clear to us. Also, I don't think Justin's relationship with his mother will be the same as it was, but that doesn't mean she doesn't love him anymore.

-Betty and Daniel scenes were good here. Oh and Daniel punching Matt- wow! now I didn't see that one coming.

-I think Willie and Nico are going to bring Cal and Claire down by working together, but we'll see whether Yaya Costa's guest appearance lasts more than 3 episodes.

-Betty's transformation with her donning the Blue suit was good to see. Finally, 4 years on, Betty's dress sense has changed for the better.  Thank goodness.

- The ending was great.

But overall, the two- parter was just like the two part series finale of last season: one not so good episode- the second episode was good. The first 40 minutes of the first part was a 'slow- burner'; kind of dull, nothing special and nothing really great happened,- well apart from Claire and Cal not firing Willie. The second half in contrast was very good; it was more interesting and lively. It does have a Season 1 feel to it, which I think is just what this show needs. In fact, Season 4 needs to build on the positives of Season 3 but also maintain the Season 1 vibe which made it so watchable, brilliant and funny.

However, compared to the previous first episodes of Seasons 1-3, I thought this one was very 'weak' in comparison; it's probably the weakest one so far.  It is nowhere as brilliant or good as the Pilot or even 'The Manhattan Project' from last season.

And so, it was an okay episode all- round. It wasn't by any means amazing or spectacular. However, I just wished the first half was as interesting and good as the second.

TV Guide Interview With Eric Mabius

Ugly Betty's Eric Mabius Reveals His Thoughts on a Daniel-Betty Relationship
by Gina DiNunno

Oct 16, 2009 12:05 AM ET

The Season 3 finale of Ugly Betty wasn't kind to Daniel Meade: His new bride, Molly, died of cancer. Eric Mabius, who plays the grieving editor-in-chief of Mode, explains how Daniel is coping with his loss, how he ends up involved in a cult and whether he thinks Daniel and Betty will ultimately be together.

TVGuide.com: Is Daniel coping with Molly's death?

Eric Mabius: Daniel is kind of losing it this season. There's a bunch of funny stuff that happens, but it's sad at the same time. For quite a few episodes, we see him lost and sort of little boy-like. He's grasping at straws, and he's having serious anger issues, which he's trying to get a handle on. Daniel's lost because this was the first mature love of his life. He's completely not over Molly and doesn't know how to process it.

TVGuide.com: So what does he do?

Mabius: Things eventually get so bad that he starts going to a support group that winds up being a cult whose leader promises the hope of reuniting with lost loved ones. It gave us a great opportunity to bring in some amazing guest stars, like Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Dylan Baker. You start thinking it's going to be like Fight Club because Jamie-Lynn plays this dark character, but it goes down a completely different track.

TVGuide.com: Things must be tough at Mode with all this going on.

Mabius: With Daniel losing control in certain areas of his life, he's trying to grasp harder at others. Matt is pained over the rejection from Betty, and it's very clear there's some jealousy. So Daniel really tries to rush to Betty's aid, and it ends up creating a whole bunch more drama for her in the workplace. That's what brings Daniel to punch out one of his co-workers in a fit of rage in Betty's defense. It's always one step forward and 10 steps back for Daniel.

TVGuide.com: With Daniel and Betty constantly rushing to each other's sides, do you think they will eventually become a couple like they have on versions of the show that have aired in other countries?

Mabius: I never know an answer to that question. People feel attached to the bond between Daniel and Betty because it's complex. Sometimes she's the older sister to the younger brother, or it's the reverse. It's always fluctuating — even though it's some form of Betty saving Daniel's ass. I think having them get married would really speed up the inevitable end. Having Matt there gives Betty her own identity separate of her relationship with Daniel. I think they will eventually come together, but not in a romantic way. It's kind of like Joanie and Chachi. You think you want to them to get together, but after that's achieved, it's like bad chocolate. You're left feeling a bit dissatisfied.

TVGuide.com: How long before Daniel snaps back to reality?

Mabius: He'll try to get back on the horse. We just shot some scenes in the Bahamas where he and Marc go to hit on guys and girls together. Marc can't get lucky because apparently there are no gay people in the Bahamas, and Daniel can't get lucky because apparently he lost his game. They sort of help each other out and it's really funny and sweet.

TV Guide Interview With Becki Newton

Ugly Betty's Becki Newton: "Amanda Goes All Ways"

Now that Amanda (Becki Newton) knows who her mom is — the late Mode editor and fashion legend Fey Sommers — what's her next quest? A chance meeting with eerily familiar temp Helen (guest star Kristen Johnston) gives her a glimpse at her not-so-rosy future, which sends her on a very surprising path. As Ugly Betty returns for its fourth season, Newton tells us how Amanda will grow this season, what she really thinks of Betty and with whom she'll be making out.

TVGuide.com: Tell me about working with Kristen Johnston.

Becki Newton: She's completely genius. I want her to come back, I want [Helen] and Amanda to become besties and go clubbing together. She took a part that could have been a wacky caricature, but actually made it the perfect balance, where just when you think that Helen is totally insane, you see that she has some heart.

TVGuide.com: So Amanda meets Helen, who's kind of like the ghost of Christmas future for her. What's next?

Newton:
I think that for the first few seasons, it was very clear that Amanda didn't want to be bothered with any type of work. She's at a fashion magazine because she loves fashion -- mostly just wearing it. There is a certain reality show with a certain stylist [Newton declines to identify it, but duh, it's Bravo's The Rachel Zoe Project], and I thought, "Oh my God, that's a glimpse of Amanda's future." We're going to see that Amanda's love of fashion can help her get ahead in her career. Amanda has a real skill that can actually benefit Mode magazine, apart from looking cute — not that she won't still look cute.

TVGuide.com: So what exactly is she going to be doing?

Newton:
I've always loved the idea that Amanda knows the entire inventory of the closet [from memory] because she's stolen everything. But that knowledge could really come in handy if, say, an editor was looking for something for a photo shoot. Amanda could say, "Third shelf on the right."

TVGuide.com: So she'll be helping Betty with the shoot in the Bahamas?

Newton: She's going to be the associate stylist. That will be the first time that she has a title other than idiot receptionist. But I'm sure Amanda would say that Betty is helping her. In her mind, everyone including Wilhelmina will be assisting her, because she got a promotion.

TVGuide.com: What does Amanda really think of Betty?

Newton: I think Amanda is partially in love with her. Every time Amanda makes fun of her for looking so wacky and for coming up with those weird outfits, there's a tiny ounce of admiration that Betty doesn't care what other people think. I mean, clearly — look at the patterns she puts together. Amanda would never admit to it because she cares desperately what people think of her. But Betty will tell Amanda the truth, and I think there's some value in that for Amanda.

TVGuide.com: I like when we see Amanda in moments of vulnerability.

Newton:
At the beginning, I always got the sense that Amanda cried herself to sleep every night. But on the surface, she had this total air of confidence; she was like a shark. Over the last couple of seasons, though, she'll cry in front of everyone and anyone. She was kind of a mess. This season she actually has goals. It's Amanda, so it's always going to be a little obtuse and flaky, but I think she now actually possesses the confidence she pretended to have in Season 1.

TVGuide.com: Will Amanda find love this season?

Newton: Well, she has Marc, who is her one true love. She had Halston, who I think got a pilot on another network because I haven't seen that dog in a while. I think that she'll continue to search for love, but I get the sense that Amanda's moving more toward being independent and complete on her own.

TVGuide.com: What's your favorite scene that you've shot so far?

Newton: There's a scene in the fourth episode where Amanda makes out with a few different people, people who you would not expect. And that's right, I said a few. Amanda goes all ways, and this little sequence will prove it.

TV Guide Interview With Vanessa Williams

Ugly Betty: Vanessa Williams on Wilhelmina's Latest Scheme

Oct 15, 2009 08:44 PM ET
by Mickey O'Connor

It isn't easy playing Ugly Betty's scheming, nasty Wilhelmina Slater -- especially at the beginning of Season 4, when she's lost her man, her baby and her job. But Vanessa Williams is glad that Willi doesn't always get her way, as it helps explain why she's so guarded. Williams tells us how Willi will deal with her setbacks, why the arrival of her daughter, Nico (America's Next Top Model's Yaya DaCosta), will distract her and what Willi and Betty have in common.

TVGuide.com: Wilhelmina was in a pretty sad place at the end of the season. Is it this adversity that motivates her?

Vanessa Williams: She was singing the blues. Every time she opens up her heart and is vulnerable, and gets burned, she puts another chink in her armor and fortifies herself. That's the human condition. I mean, she does it to an extreme. I'm sure when [series creator Silvio Horta] first sketched her for the pilot, we had no idea how far we'd take her.

TVGuide.com: Are you glad the character has that depth?

Williams: Yeah, I'm so happy that I get to play a well-developed character. But I also know she can't lose her bite. That's her go-to, that's her humor, her comfort zone. And I know that people tune in to hear what phenomenal, witty lines our writers come up with on a weekly basis.

TVGuide.com: Things take a turn for Willi when her daughter Nico returns with some pretty heavy baggage in tow. What is this story line supposed to be showing us?

Williams: I think it brings out the lioness in her, the mother, the protector. You saw a little bit of conflict between Wilhelmina and her daughter in the first season [when she was played by another actress], but I think Yaya did a phenomenal job. It's another great pairing. It shows that no matter what happens, Wilhelmina is going to protect her child.

TVGuide.com: Now that Daniel is in mourning, will you be doing more with Judith Light, whose character has taken over the company?

Williams: Yes, I love being able to play with Judith. We've got more tasty stuff coming up. The two of us have been in the business for so long we're like seasoned vets. We tell stories, we share information. There's a comfort there in being an old pro.

TVGuide.com: Betty's an editor now, so I have to ask: Is there any part of Willi that roots for Betty?

Williams: Yes, we've touched on it a couple times. I've given her advice: Don't turn into me. Don't let work get in the way. Enjoy your life, be careful, because you're driven like me. Beware. Beware. Obviously her style drives Wilhelmina crazy, but she admires her for her respect and she always knows that she'll be true and virtuous, and that's a comfort for her.

TVGuide.com: Is Willi going to make things right with Marc?

Williams: They'll get back together. It's too much of a dynamic for that not to work again.

TVGuide.com: And will we see Connor again?

Williams: The Connor-Willi story showed her softening, almost giving up everything for love. She was afraid to give him her heart because she had been burned before. It shows the female side of Wilhelmina as opposed to the automaton Terminator side of her. It was a nice dynamic. Most of the feedback that I got was that this was a man who could handle her. He's not eclipsed by her; he's not overpowering her; he's on her level. And I think that's why people believed it.

TVGuide.com: What's Willi's endgame? Where would you like to see her end up?

Williams: Maybe she opens Mode Australia and runs off to Connor, so she can have her man and run her magazine the way she wants to.

Comment: Friday Night 'The Kiss Of Death' For Ugly Betty In U.S... Or Is It?

A couple of months ago, when news of Ugly Betty's move to Friday nights was finally unveiled, there were gasps of horror and scepticism wailing in the air amongst TV critics and fans alike.

From what I've read, people in America do not watch TV on Friday evenings- they prefer to go out instead. Plus, in TV land it is considered the start of the beginning of a show's decline. In fact, the shows that are on Friday nights in U.S. tend to be ones that people do not care for in the slightest. For the last three seasons, Ugly Betty had occupied the Thursday night slot and whilst the first two seasons- or be it the first season- was a major success story, Season 3 in U.S. has been struggling in the ratings. Viewers were deserting this show in droves and for many ex-Ugly Betty fans, who loved seasons 1 and 2 but were left unimpressed by season 3, for them enough was enough.

The fourth season will bring a lot of challenges and it will be interesting to see whether Ugly Betty's quality still holds up. Fans have signalled this move as the death of Ugly Betty and that as a show, there is no way it will recover from it, for as long as they do not watch it on Friday nights.

It is rather a pity that in the States, for a show as hugely massive and popular as Ugly Betty is to be aired on Friday nights, fans are really starting to buy into this doubt and not watch the fourth season; here in the UK, when Ugly Betty first arrived on British shores a year later after its debut in the States in 2007, there was a lot of hype and publicity by Channel 4, who bought the rights to this show for the UK market.
The first series had aired on Friday evenings at 9.00pm, and it was an instant ratings smash and as the episodes got better, so did the viewing figures. According to Wikipedia, from what I've read, the pilot episode attracted almost 5 million- which for a relatively small channel such as Channel 4, is very impressive. The series 1 finale episode, 'East Side Story'  achieved 3.2 million in the UK alone. The second series fared well too, even though I am not a personal fan of it; again this was on Fridays.

Channel 4 on Friday nights in the UK, back then was a massive showcase for American imported TV- it was always that way-  the likes of Friends, Frasier and Ugly Betty were occupying the time-slots, and British viewers had always looked forward to sitting in front of the TV at home watching the likes of Marc, Amanda, Wilhelmina and Betty get up to all manners of mischief and hilarity.

Just recently, the third series of Ugly Betty was moved to Wednesday nights- and then onto Monday nights, and as much as I miss watching it on Fridays, it is still doing very well.

I do hope that the American Ugly Betty fans will especially take heart from this and be encouraged by the success of this show in the UK when it was on Friday nights here, and see this as not as the beginning of the end but that the time slot is not so much of a factor. As long as the quality of the storylines and episodes get better as the fourth season goes on, then that is all that really matters at the end of the day and show will live another day.

Or be it another season :).
