Tom From Ugly Betty News: Amanda To Become A Designer At Mode (?)

TimesTalks: An Evening With Ugly Betty

Mode After Hours: Stress-Orcism

October 26, 2009 by Tom

'This webisode gave me one of those “duh!” moments, and gave me a pretty good idea of where Amanda’s storyline is going. I think she is going to get close to Matt, not to become his lover, but to get him to give her Christina’s job. I mean, she would most prefer to marry a billionaire, or start out as a designer, but that’s not going to happen. BUT, working in the closet can lead to a career as a designer, as Christina showed.

I assumed at the end of last season that Amanda would finally try to weasel her way into being Daniel’s assistant (she always wanted the job). It never occurred to me that she might want Christina’s job, but she’s always in the closet anyway, knows her way around the sex room, and knows a thing or two about design.
When you look at it that way, it does seem like a perfect fit (Amanda will have to develop a work ethic, though).'

Notice that Tom mentioned that *Amanda will get close to Matt* but not in terms of becoming his girlfriend- rather that both he and Marc see the potential in her from a work point-of-view, so that Matt can promote her as Mode's new seamstress/designer.

I think Tom might be onto something here. I hope he is right on this: I do hope though that she doesn't fall for Matt in the end, or that if the worst does happen, that the relationship is short-lived. I see those two having very little in common with each other and I just cannot see those two as a couple, anyway.

Silvio Horta did mention that at some point during Season 4 we will see Amanda's, as well as Marc's love lives but also, Amanda is going to get the promotion she deserves, after losing out to Betty as Daniel's assistant. The Amanda Tanen of season 1 would've been happy doing the paperwork, making contacts- stuff that Betty was and is still doing for that matter, even though she is now an editor. If Amanda had been Daniel's assistant that is. But 3, 4 years has since passed,- and I think that as the show moves onto another level, we'll see that Amanda's career aspirations and ambitions have almost completely changed.

Now, instead, she wants to fill Christina's void, or be it shoes- she realises she has a purpose at Mode- other than sitting at her desk, answering the phones and thus, probably knows what she is capable of doing; work-wise. Amanda notices she has a creative flair and though she spends a lot of time in the love dungeon/secret sex room, this is where we will see her ideas for fashion really come into play and for her to utilise those ideas. As proven in the last episode and back in season 3, Amanda has shown she is not as dumb as people make her out to be.

A lot of fans expect Amanda to climb further up the career ladder, which is important for her because she has been an assistant for far too long- I'd still love for her to find love, yet frankly, I don't see it happen with Matt.
The writers have to grasp Becki Newton's character this season, even though Season 3 Amanda was fab; the so-called love triangle she is 'apparently' involved in is something I am not particularly looking forward to- although I am hoping Amanda doesn't revert back to the Mandy of early Season 1.

As far as I see it, I think it is time we saw Amanda's worth and potential as a possible designer- writers, take hint of this please.
